CoRe GTE Takes Podium!
The fifth round of the second Sports Car Open season took place at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace – better known as Interlagos – for a four hours race. CoRe SimRacing and its’ three line-ups of two Ford GTs and a Honda HPD entry were steered by Janne Kiuru with Thomas Arends. Ross Balfour with Kenny Roosens and Maxime Pauly with Santeri Kallunki. GTE’s finished P3 & P5 – the PC entry came home in P4.
Santeri qualified with a very solid lap and secured pole position in the Prototype Challenge class. Ross & Thomas, who did the fast laps in the GTE category, ended up with a maximum P7 and P12 on the grid. The start went surprisingly clean in all classes – Santeri immediately stepped away from AVA Vervatic behind and opened up a small gap until the traffic kicked in. As Interlagos it not tremendously long in track distance, the LMP1 category was on their tails pretty early. Both CoRe GTEs could advance a couple of positions in the first hour despite Ross got caught up with a slow down in lap two. Santeri continued to advance the lead as ongoing traffic spread out the field even more. He gave over to Maxime after the two hour mark. Kenny & Thomas took over in the GTE category and kept pushing towards a Top 5 result.
Thomas was about to chase down a podium result while Kenny tried to hold the gap to his own team mate. He was able keep his postions after a couple of tough fights against TX3 and Glacier Racing. The race seemed pretty well for CoRe until Maxime in the leading HPD got disconnected from the server. A frustrating and mandatory tow was needed and Santeri had to jump in again. He continued the race and exited the pits in P5. In the meanwhile Thomas wheel’d the CoRe Ford in 3rd and Kenny defended his 5th position very well. Also Santeri was able to advance to P4 in the end. The Prototype Challenge results were a little bit spread out this time by – making it an interesting final.
The frustration was big after the team realized as it could have been a solid victory in the PC class. AVA Vervatic did not finish and Team Buschfink took the win. Nevertheless the GTE results seem very promising now. CoRe GTE1 ends the penultimate race being P2 in the overall standings now. CoRe GTE2 takes P6 in the results lists. The CoRe HPD leads the PC standings with four points. It is gonna be a very exciting and intense decider in the 8h Silverstone final in about 3 weeks now.
