Thomas Gibson & Kimmo Suominen Win GT3 Class!
The 2019 iRacing 6 Hours of Watkins Glen was joined by CoRe SimRacing with four entries – two C7 Daytona Prototypes with Carl Jansson & Marius Golombeck along side Pascal Stix & Sven Neumann. In addition to that CoRe started with two Mercedes AMG GT3 cars including Thomas Gibson & Kimmo Suominen and Maik Paluch with Ronald Großmann. The CoRe DPs qualified 2nd and 9th while the CoRe Mercedes AMG GT3s started the six hours endurance event from 3rd and 9th position.
The start procedure in the GT3 class underwent in early trouble – Thomas, who began the race in the primary CoRe GT3, had to avoid a contact between the leaders before the main straight. Maik, who was just behind, had to go to the inside line and was also able to advance a position before the race even started. The DPs went off pretty safely and Carl and Pascal dived into their first laps around Watkins Glen.
Maik gave over to Ronald after a single stint. The secondary GT3 entry was able to advance to P5. After a safe ride by Ronald their race ended right before the end of hour two – a pathetic lapping judgement from a backmarker DP led to a punt which sent Ronald into the armco. The first setback did not interrupt the team though – Carl continued fighting for a podium position and chasing the leader DPs Altus and ERT. The second DP tried to reach P5 while Sven and Pascal were wheeling confidently. Marius took over the car in P2 but had to suffer a disconnect. After the good stint by Marius though Carl had to jump back in the car to rejoin the race.
A splash’n dash for the CoRe DPs could not be avoided. An ending fight with the Biela Racing DP let them return to a maximum of a 4th position. Sven and Pascal ended the race in a solid 6th position. On the other hand Kimmo was able to bring home the CoRe GT3 entry in 1st and finished the race for the overall GT3 class victory alongside a fantastic opening run by Thomas. The next iRacing event will be the 24h of Spa. The RaceSpotTV broadcast of this race can be found here.
