R.Balfour 2nd In Roar Before 24h!
The first special event of the 2019 iRacing schedule was the 2.4 hours race around the Daytona circuit – the “roar before the 24” and CoRe’s own Ross Balfour, the #fullirish himself, came home second in the KIA Optima category after an exciting fuel save run against the clock.
Ross qualified in 3rd and let himself fall down from the early on. He was stuck in 6th for a good amount of laps – trying to keep it on the track on one fuel run as long as possible, he found himself back in the front for a short period. PRT’s Fabrice Cornelis was able to stay out as longest. With the first pitstop done the whole pack went off for another eco run. Traffic was a consisting factor in the whole race for the KIAs fuel consumption, too – Ross had to avoid couple of incidents in front of him after several Mazda MX5’s and Ford Mustangs were victims of rough multiclass racing. After the last pitstop was done and PRT’s Cornelis once again was staying out 1 lap longer than everyone else it was clear that Ross had to go in for an ending splash & dash. In the last minutes of the race, Ross was also able to defend the early pitstop undercut attack from PRT’s Laubisch. He overtook him in the last laps and was able to finish the nerve-racking race in a solid 2nd position.
Ross was a little bit disappointed that it was not enough for the victory : “I did not save enough fuel and Fabrice had the consumption to skip a final stop. It was a very tough trip to keep the comsumption low.” Nevertheless the team is pretty happy with his outcome – it’s the first 2019 iRacing result for CoRe SimRacing.
